I told the kids they could wear their costumes to their lessons this week. We’re off to an excellent start 🎃 👻

#halloween2025 #pianolessons #enderman #portlandfrogI’ve taught adults from the beginning and these days they make about over 1/3 of my studio! Every one is different and I love learning how to teach each individual. This began as a short email to parents - “Why we chat” - and as I laid out all the reasons and the supporting theories behind them… then started finding sources… well, it turned into a whole research paper/blog post! Check it out:

Learning a new and difficult skill like piano is not just a healthy distraction, it’s also a wonderful self-esteem boost! This kiddo is only two months into his lessons and his confidence has gone from “I’m not sure I can learn piano” to this amazing smile. ☺️ He’s been dedicated to his practice each week and it’s all adding up to something he’s feeling proud of.

#portland #pianolessons #onlinepianoteacherI recently watched a video from my favorite internet therapist, @raquelmartinphd , and the subject was Capacity vs. Discipline. She succinctly defined and gave tips for something that I’ve been vaguely talking about with students for years. -something that's important to consider as you develop new routines and live them.

https://portland-piano-lessons.com/blog/piano-practice—capacity-vs-disciplineIt was grand staff day for Everett and I kinda love that this photo is blurry because it somehow conveys just how excited he was. This kiddo is pumped to learn how to read music after having been taught by ear by his last teacher! I love playing by ear, and will continue to nurture that for Everett, but I won’t let that be all there is for him. About half my students come to me from other teachers, and 90% are unable to read the music they’ve been playing. Helping them change that and empower themselves to be able to play anything they see - is one of my favorite things. #pianolessons #onlinepianolessons
